The 2025 Gopher State Baseball season proved once again that community-based youth baseball is alive and well in Minnesota. Despite some challenging weather throughout the summer, players represented their community in both league play and tournament play across 19 divisions of play.
509 teams played in the Gopher State Baseball League, with teams ranging from Woodbury to the St. Cloud area. The divisions are formed both by division level and by geography. After a 14-game season, teams have the option to participate in a tiered playoff format.
The Gopher State Rec Baseball League provides the same set-up as the GSBL for recreational level teams. It allows for less a less intensive schedule but still teams from one community to play teams from other communities. In all 54 teams competed across three levels of the GSRBL.
Gopher State Baseball also ran three major tournaments that serve as qualifiers to the Gopher State Tournament of Champions. In those tournaments we saw:
99 teams at the Spring Invitationals
67 teams at the Duluth Invitational
121 teams at the Mid-Summer Classic
The tournament and qualification process brought us to the 2025 Gopher State Tournament of Champions. The GSTC is the highlight event of the summer, bringing together teams that have won (or been runner-up) in tournaments across the summer season.
In all, 19 teams out of 609 claimed their GSTC ring and a trip to Target Field to celebrate with their team. Thank you to our awesome host groups who make help make the GSTC as special as it is.
The Gopher State Baseball off-season begins with the Gopher State Fall Baseball League. It may seem strange to start the 2026 season in September, but the Fall League serves as a development opportunity to players as they head into their next age level. It gives them an opportunity to play at their 2026 age level/rules and keep their skills sharp as they head into their tryouts. In all 255 participated in the Gopher State Fall League.
Winter is the hot-stove season for baseball and it is no different at the MYAS offices. We will begin our regional meetings with the association leaders on December 9th. We will have 5 meetings with ~10 associations in each one that are similar in size/geography. They will give us a chance to understand the needs of the associations, where youth baseball is heading, and allow for some collaborative solutions to issues that pop-up.
2026 will mark the start of some new divisions - 14/15A, which has served as a catch-all division at the lower levels of 14u and 15u will now be split into 14A and 15A. Teams made up of all 15u level players were seeing a decided advantage within the age level. The split will also give 13A level players a more distinct group to move to (14A) in future seasons. 15A also provides a path for those 14A level players, along with any players not making their high school teams more a defined path to continue their baseball careers.
After a trial run with a handful of like-minded communities, we are also introducing the 9A division in 2026. 9AA has become one of the larger baseball divisions and adding the 9A allows for balancing the competitive landscape, particularly for the teams at the lower end of the 9AA level.
Lance Klinkhammer has been working on the Association Reports, which give the association leaders some guidance on where their teams may best fit from a competitive standpoint. The goal is to help the associations put their teams in a spot that balances both winning and development.
The summer baseball season in Minnesota includes play in local, community run tournaments. Many of those tournaments serve as qualifiers (the 1st and 2nd place teams automatically qualify) for the GSTC.
On December 5th, a record 419 tournaments were chosen as GSTC Qualifiers for the 2026 season. We also saw a record 587 events requesting to be a GSTC qualifier, again proving that baseball in Minnesota is in a good place. Qualifiers will take place in Minnesota, North Dakota, and Wisconsin. Due to increased demand, we will be offering several new age divisions.
New age divisions for 2026:
15A
14A
9A
Registrations are underway for the Spring Invites, Duluth Invites, and the Mid-Summer Classic. These Gopher State Baseball events have more GSTC berths up for grabs (GSTC berth info can be found HERE). We expect the tournament fields to be strong once again in the new year.

We are in the process of assigning the 2026 hosts for the GSTC. We have a lot of returning hosts that span across both the Metro area and Greater Minnesota. Sartell, Rochester, Brainerd, Mankato, and Marshall all offer a great experience for teams. Rogers, Richfield, and Sauk Rapids have all expressed interest in becoming hosts for the GSTC over the next few years.
Enrollment for both the Gopher State Baseball League and the Gopher State Rec Baseball League will open on February 1st, 2026. Throughout the year we'll be looking to highlight players, teams and stories that make youth baseball amazing!
