May is Mental Health Awareness Month

Minnesota #MentalHealthAwarenss Weekend presented by MYAS & NAMI Minnesota

Gopher State Spring Basketball Series, May 6-7

As part of the May 6-7 Gopher State Spring Basketball Series, MYAS has teamed up with the National Alliance on Mental Illness- Minnesota to focus on promoting good mental health practices and resources to the Minnesota youth sports community. During check-in at tournament headquarters, your coach/team manager will receive MYAS-NAMI Minnesota co-branded lime green (color for mental health awareness) wristbands for every player and coach on your team.

MYAS-NAMI Minnesota will also have wristbands available at admissions for parents/spectators to grab on the way into the gym.

Members of NAMI Minnesota will also be on site at select playing locations providing information and resources about mental health and providing everyone on site the opportunity to participate in the “Shoe Day” event. This is an interactive game for youth and adults to bring messages of understanding, hope, and support for individuals coping with a mental health challenge.

Goodies and prizes will be available from NAMI Minnesota for your participation in the Shoe Day event.

Shoe Day Event Schedule on location at Gopher State Spring Basketball Series:

Saturday, May 6 from 10:00am-2:00pm

Locations: Midtown YWCA, St. Paul Humboldt HS, and Benilde-St. Margaret’s HS

Sunday, May 7 from 10:00am-2:00pm

Locations: St. Paul Johnson Senior HS, Benidle-St. Margaret’s HS and Farmington HS

Here are details on the NAMI Minnesota "Shoe Day" event:

"Walk in My Shoes" presentations organized by NAMI Minnesota have been held at numerous schools in the Metro area over the past several years. Students pledge their support and write encouraging messages on shoe cut-outs which are then posted in the schools.  Each spring during Mental Health Awareness Month, NAMI Minnesota offers this event to bring a message of understanding, hope, and support.

This is a great time to think about ways in which we can support others who are coping with a mental health challenge. Who comes to mind? What will that look like? Maybe you could use a little extra support yourself. What would be most helpful for you right now?

  • Please look for more information throughout the month of May on www.myas.org, via email and MYAS social media channels promoting #MentalHealthMonth, in partnership with NAMI Minnesota.

Let’s work together to promote good mental health practices and resources, support those living with a mental illness, and end the discrimination surrounding mental health.
