ABOUT MINNESOTA YOUTH ATHLETIC SERVICES

The Minnesota Youth Athletic Services, Inc. (MYAS) originated in 1991 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to improving and enhancing the delivery of youth sports services to young athletes, coaches, parents, and the associations that serve them. The MYAS is Minnesota's largest multi-sport organization focused solely on youth athletics with more than 150,000 kids participating in our programs and services annually. The MYAS is a central clearinghouse for youth sports, serving as an information channel linking hundreds of youth associations, coaches, and thousands of parents.

The MYAS, Inc., has grown into a comprehensive multi-sport organization and continues to evolve with its strategy and organization chart. Based on this understanding, the MYAS is looking for a Basketball General Manager to serve the youth basketball community in Minnesota and western Wisconsin through the MYAS programs and services we offer. This includes but is not limited to the winter community-based season (October-March) as well as the spring/summer/fall “open” season. These seasons are in collaboration with youth sports associations, youth club leadership, coaches, parents, and community leaders. The General Manager of Basketball/Brand Ambassador is responsible for promoting the mission, values, and goals of the MYAS, while overseeing the administration of all basketball department programs, policies, and procedures under the direction of the Associate Directors and the MYAS Executive Director.

RESPONSIBILITIES FOR GM OF BASKETBALL
  • Be a visionary, steering the ship into the future by being responsible for organizing, enhancing, modifying, and establishing the next season of programming

  • Provide leadership and direction to ensure the effective operation and delivery of programs and services, with a focus on the operations of the basketball department

  • Meet daily with Basketball Managing Director to collaborate and provide oversight and guidance to maximize the success of day-to-day operations while functioning efficiently and effectively

  • Maintain day-to-day duties and responsibilities inside current season programs, which includes but is not limited to scheduling, event creation and enhancements, and working in coordination with Basketball Managing Director to ensure that all daily and weekly duties are fulfilled

  • Establish weekly strategy sessions and individual check-ins with members of the basketball department

  • Support the organization’s mission and principles

  • Ensure a positive work environment inside the basketball department (and any other area this position may oversee) that maximizes employee performance while complying with all federal and state laws, rules, and regulations

  • Oversee marketing and public relations of all basketball programs with Marketing Manager, Basketball Managing Director, and other Program Directors to increase and enhance visibility of programs, services, and activities, and maintain good public relations

  • Design and execute major events, tournaments, leagues, and other competitions, including marketing, registration process, rosters, scheduling, facilities, officials, and general operations

  • Manage staff, including recruitment, training, disciplinary action, and policies & procedures under the direction of the Executive Director

  • Oversee basketball rules and rules emphasis in collaboration with Director and Assistant Director of Officiating Services, reviewing the process annually with community input from various sport committees

  • Generate additional revenue to support programs through sponsorships, marketing and development of programs, and fundraising in conjunction with Business Development Director

  • Ensure continual updates of existing technology, resources, and processes for the basketball department and the overall organization

  • Nurture the MYAS's strategic alliances with community leaders, other youth serving organizations, parents, families, and funders

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the MYAS/MYBA Basketball Board of Advisors and consistently recruit, educate, and retain leaders in youth basketball

RESPONSIBILITIES FOR MYAS BRAND AMBASSADOR
  • Be a brand ambassador that represents, promotes, and advertises the MYAS brand, supports its programs and services, and acts as a key embodiment of the organization.

    • Represent the MYAS brand positively in a multitude of settings

    • Assist with content creation (written, oral and digital)

    • Participate in marketing of programs/services of MYAS

    • Generate brand awareness through word-of-mouth marketing

    • Attend and promote MYAS youth sports programs and services

ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Accountable for leadership, guidance, progress, enhancement, and success with basketball department to understand and fill capacity for programs and services

  • Accountable for understanding the evolving landscape of basketball and understanding the needs of the community to create improved brand perception and recognition

  • Accountable to ensure that communication and messaging achieves defined goals for the MYAS brand and its many other brands inside the basketball department

  • Accountable for developing a brand scorecard that monitors recognition and perception among users and non-users in target markets

  • Accountable for demonstrating improved performance of marketing branding and communications efforts

  • Accountable for developing by-channel metrics for achieving goals

  • Accountable for keeping an internally accessible marketing calendar that is continually updated

  • Accountable for providing a monthly performance report that monitors reach and engagement of efforts of all basketball programs

 

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
  • Experience in project management with multiple team members

  • Experience working with individuals with varying levels of education, social and economic backgrounds, and diverse perspectives

  • Strong and diverse set of communication skills with audiences of varying size, in person and/or virtually

  • Experience working with online software and the ability to identify opportunities for improvement in the user experience

  • Passion for sports and the potential impact that it can have on youth participants

  • Working knowledge of Office 365 Office Suite, Google Drive, website management, and digital media marketing

  • Demonstrated ability to organize, direct, plan, and coordinate operations

  • Leadership skills, including negotiation, problem solving, decision making, delegation

  • Capacity to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all MYAS team members and all stakeholders of the organization (advisory committees/task forces, community groups/leaders, club directors, and other related sponsors and partners)

PREFFERED EXPERIENCE
  • Experience leading a team of individuals

  • Advanced degree in Management, Administration, or Communication

  • Experience working in youth sports in any capacity (coach, official, administrator, volunteer)

  • Knowledge of the Minnesota youth basketball landscape

  • 3-5 years of professional youth sports administration and management experience

  • Experience scheduling tournaments and leagues

SALARY/HOURS/LOCATION

Salary commensurate with experience, with opportunities for advancement based on performance 

  • Office hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00am-4:00pm (mandatory 37.5 hours per week)
    • Flexibility to attend weekend tournaments, leagues, and events
    • Some flexibility with standard work hours is negotiable
  • This is not a remote position; the expectation is the workweek will be at the MYAS office in Spring Lake Park, MN
