PLAYING ON A YOUTH TRAVELING TEAM AND A HIGH SCHOOL TEAM

MN State High School League (MSHSL) Bylaw 208.1.A.A

  • “A student who is a member of a high school team may not participate as an individual competitor or as a member of a non-school team in the same sport during the high school season.” This rule applies to students in all grades who might be a participant on a varsity, junior varsity, 10th grade, or any other team that includes any students in grades 10,11, and 12.
  • Teams that consist only of 9th graders and below and only compete against other teams at this same level are not governed by this rule.

Per the MSHSL Bylaw, a 7th or 8th grader cannot play on both a traveling (non-school) team and a high school team that consists of players in 10th, 11th or 12th grade.

The MYAS recommends that every student talk with their athletic administrator about their specific situation and not rely on other interpretations of the rules.
