The Minnesota Youth Athletic Services (MYAS) has joined industry leaders to offer a comprehensive set of new association services. These include:

  • Coaching Education
  • Criminal Background Checks for Coaches and Key Volunteers
  • Association Liability and Player Sports Accident Insurance

The MYAS association services now offer a "one-stop shop" that ensures the optimal youth sports experience and the best value for your dollar.

Coaching Education Program
Have you ever received one of these “Monday morning” phone calls?

“That coach doesn’t know what he’s doing!” or “My kid should be starting—she’s by far the best on the team!” How about, “That was the worst officiating I’ve ever seen!” and “That kid is never at practice so why did he play the whole game?”

The most important step we can take to ensure a positive experience for young athletes is to properly train and prepare volunteers for their roles as coaches and mentors.

But how do you choose the right training program? Has it been tested and evaluated? Does it simplify the training for volunteers who already lead busy and active lives?

The MYAS can help you.

The MYAS has joined with the American Sport Education Program (ASEP) to offer the Volunteer Coaches Education Program to our participants. ASEP, a division of Human Kinetics, Inc. of Champaign, Illinois, is the leading coaching education provider in the U.S. Through a partnership with the National Federation of State High School Associations, ASEP provides coaching education to 38 state high school associations, including the Minnesota State High School League.

ASEP’s Volunteer Coaches Education Program provides sport organizations with a turnkey solution for coaching education. Courses are offered as both in-person clinics and online courses, and are available for baseball, basketball, football, soccer, softball, tennis, volleyball and wrestling.

What makes the ASEP program different is that coaches receive both training and take-home materials. Each coach receives a book and video for the sport they coach. It’s not “one-and-you’re-done”; it’s education that lasts throughout the season. ASEP also has the most comprehensive selection of youth sports books, videos and other coaching aids available.

Criminal Background Checks
How do we protect our children? Reports of sexual predators and child abuse involving the clergy, day care workers and youth volunteers are all too familiar. Unfortunately, this includes a disturbing number of youth sports coaches who have a history of incidents of sexual misconduct and/or violence. This is a complex issue and many youth sports organizations are unclear about what to do or how to approach this threat, yet they must take proactive steps to prevent their children from becoming innocent victims.

Youth sports associations now have a simple and inexpensive tool to avoid one of society’s worst fears.

The MYAS, with its partner RHR Information Systems, has designed a criminal background check system that offers three affordable options to youth sports associations. RHR, a local Twin Cities company, incorporates a “user-friendly” process combined with  flexible information delivery to make this system easy and inexpensive for your organization. RHR provides the speed and interaction of web-based access and the flexibility of other delivery methods upon request. And, if you have questions along the way, a Customer Service Representative is always available to assist you.

Association Liability and Player Sports Accident Insurance
In our increasingly litigious society, association liability and player sports accident insurance is always a concern for youth sports organizations. Often, depending upon their ability to pay, some associations will spend a lot of money for insurance while others “go naked” without even minimal liability coverage for their members. Without insurance, however, if a serious accident or incident occurs, the personal assets of the individuals running the association may be at risk. Additionally, many sports facilities managers working for municipalities and schools will not permit uninsured youth sports associations to use their property or facilities. Without insurance, our young athletes’ opportunities to compete in organized sports programs become substantially limited.

To meet this critical need, the MYAS has partnered with the agency that insures most of the Police Athletic Leagues (PAL) around the nation. Provided through the American Insurance Group (AIG), the MYAS Association Insurance Program offers two broad types of insurance coverage – General Liability and Player Sports Accident – that are, in some cases, cheaper together than some associations pay for a liability policy alone.
