The 2009 Twin Cities Football Championship was an adventure from start to finish. The tournament started out at the Blaine Baseball Complex on November 1. However, due to the rain the metro area had received over the past week, the field was in rough condition. The final two play dates had to be relocated because the field at the Blaine Baseball Complex was not playable. With the help of Al Johnson, the 8th grade coach from Hopkins, we were able to hold the final two play dates at Hopkins High School on their varsity field. With the play location secure, it was know time to turn our attention to the schedule.
The 2009 Twin Cities Football Championship ended up with two 7th grade teams and three 8th grade teams. The original schedule had all five teams competing in a five-team bracket tournament. However, after the first play date it was apparent that the two 7th grade teams would have an extremely hard time matching up with the 8th grade teams.
Therefore, the 7th grade schedule was modified so that the two 7th grade teams would play each other in a best two out of three format. The Farview team won the first contest by two, but Eden Prairie bounced back with a convincing win on Tuesday, November 3. The stage was set for game three on Thursday, November 5. The game went back and forth all night, but in the end Farview prevailed 12-6 over Eden Prairie.
The 8th grade schedule was also modified into a round robin format. The three teams involved were Eden Prairie, Titans and Hopkins. Eden Prairie took home the title by going 2-0 against the other two teams without allowing a point in either contest.
The event truly was exciting and adventurous from the first kick off to the last horn. We hope to see you next year as we look to expand the Twin Cities Football Championship.
